PRAWNS WITH SWEET AND SPICY SAUCE.

Yum

So, this morning around 10 o'clock I found myself with no breakfast and no food in the fridge. Normally I would be having yogurt and muesli, but I am craving something salty today. When that happens, I would be making bacon and scrambled eggs but ugh, I was out of bacon. The only thing I have in the fridge was some leftover rice from last night. I spent 20 minutes looking around for something to cook, rummaging through the pantry for some instant noodles but I am all out. I saw some onions in the pantry and I remembered what mam always says, "I only cook with onions, chili and tomatoes." And I thought to myself, Yes! I have some chili in the freezer!

The recipe is super easy and quick. With just a few ingredients you'll get a satisfying dish with a little spicy kick!

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 shallot, sliced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 bird's eye chili, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons of kecap manis
  • 100 gr prawns
  • salt and pepper to taste
Method
  • Melt butter in a frying pan and sauté the garlic, shallot and onion until lightly browned and aromatic.
  • Add in the kecap manis, and cook the sauce for about 30 seconds.
  • Add the prawns and sauté until the prawns are cooked through for about 3 - 4 minutes
  • Serve with warm rice.

Notes

  • The bird's eye chilli will be really spicy, so if you are not used to it, remove the seeds. Or, completely remove it and use a lot of peppers instead.
  • Instead of using kecap manis, you can also use oyster sauce, however the dish will taste more salty instead of sweet.
  • Here's a link of kecap manis you can get in albert heijn, jumbo or C1000. Normally, I would buy mine (kecap bango) in the chinese winkel.
  • My mam would cook this way with any kind of leftover proteins, chicken, fish or pork.
